Essay

In this dissertation, owing to and on the basis of a complex clinical-neurological examination and neuro- visualization (MR tomography and MR spectroscopy, and duplex scanning of the brain vessels) performed in 201 elderly patients, who had suffered an ischemic stroke in the carotid basin, the author has established the hemispheric specificities of the metabolic, morphometric and hemodynamic rearrangement of the brain. Within a rehabilitation period, the post-stroke patients display the characteristic hemispheric changes of correlations between cerebral hemodynamics and metabolism (NAA, Cr and Cho data), the morphometric indices and the mechanisms responsible for regulation of these correlations. The rearrangement of structural- metabolic and hemodynamic interrelationships was characterized by the heterogenic formation of the systemic and intersystem compensatory mechanisms promoting a recovery of the disturbed CNS functions as well as by the presence of the limiting links within a system of cerebral hemodynamics and metabolism regulation. The latter determines the risk of a development of new stroke.
