The research deals with an author's individual and typological transformations in the literary genre of the story in the Russian literature at the beginning of the twentieth century. Two typological groups, namely a modernist story and a neo-realistic story, are distinguished in the thesis. Each group falls into different genre varieties , such as inter-genre (novel story, essay story, myth story), generic-genre (drama story, poem story, extra-story), and style-genre ( stream of consciousness story, confession story). Modernist style tendency (intertextuality, neo-mythologism, the use of lyrical means of narration) is actualized in the literary works of the realist writers as well as modernist writers (but to a smaller extent). Modernist style tendency includes several style paradigms: existentialist-mythological, tale-ornamental and impressionist-naturalistic. The prominent features of each paradigm are reflected in the poetics of the Russian story at the beginning of the twentieth century.
