Essay

The dissertation is devoted to a complex comparative research of political institutions in 16 European countries after World War II. The essence and modern state of socio-political cleavages on the basis of economic, ethnic, religious and territorial factors have been defined. The essence of sociopolitical cleavage "new politics" has been identified and the establishment of a cleavage on the basis of attitude to immigrants has been supported. The main trends in changes of the power of presidents and prime ministers of European countries have been studied. Common and peculiar features in the formation and functioning of governments, electoral and party systems, participation of citizens in the political life of West European countries have been analyzed.
