Essay

The thesis is devoted to the investigation of the history of Ukrainian sacred song of the XVII – XVIII c. The evaluation of the scientific thought (mid XIX – beginning cc.) of the study of Ukrainian sacred song by both Ukrainian and foreign scientists: musicologist, folklorists, study of literature specialists, slavists, culturologists, and theologians is presented. The further directions of this genre in the context of musicological, folkloristic, slavistic, and interdisciplinary studies are pointed out. The musicological analysis of the genre and style of Ukrainian sacred song is performed. Their origin, influence of sacred monody, West-European sacred songs source, the genre’s development peculiarities and thematically variety and its historical, cultural, and Para liturgical essence are analyzed. Moreover, the dissertant as prepared the source study catalogue of sacred songs published in the first Ukrainian printed editions of the last quarter of the XVIII c. Thus, the conclusion about sacred song as an important musical and poetical genre of the period of XVII – XVIII cc. is made. This genre, on the one hand, is closely connected with church-musical genre and on the other hand, reveals obvious tendencies, which positively influenced that time and the following development of the national musical culture.
