Essay

This Thesis deals with complex functional and semantic analysis of the category of aspectuality. Based on functional grammar, the Thesis provides explication of basic laws of aspectual semantics categorization, its classification and representation in the modern literary Ukrainian language. The category of aspectuality for the first time in the Ukrainian Language study has been presented as a dynamic, complex and multifaceted phenomenon, the specific nature of which is determined by the interaction of the grammatical level represented by the category of aspect itself with extralingual, ontological, grammatically latent, paradigmatic, syntagmatic, pragmatic, epidigmatic and other aspectual levels. This research clarifies ontological nature and linguistic status of the category of aspectuality; developed is a complex diagnosis of the aspectual classes of the Ukrainian verb: 1) terminatives (Ukr. zdiysnennyky); 2) activities (Ukr. diyalnyky); 3) states (Ukr. stanivnyky); 4) events (Ukr. podiynyky); 5) relatives (Ukr. vidnosnyky).
