Essay

The object of research epistemological and cultural status of the Other as "body", as "discourse" and a philosophical category. The aim is investigation of the contents of category “Other” in Cultural anthropology and philosophical discourses of the 20th century through semiotics of race, nation, gender; research of sources which produced different senses and types of functioning of “Other” in modern cultural and scientific consciousness. The methods are structural -semiotic, comparative, gender and postcolonial criticism, postmodernist deconstruction, poststructuralism. The theoretical results of the thesis and its novelty is: systematization and typologization of methodological approaches and conceptual models of the Other in a history of culture; studies of representations of the Other through semiotics of race, gender, sexuality; there was grounded a conception that the World war II has stimulated the issue of the cultural, political, religious, national, gender "others" and tolerance to minority's rights; there was grounded methodology in which the Other is studied in a context of the foundators' psychobiographies of this category; there was proved the heterogeneous, plural and polymorphic nature of Other; the concept of "heterotopia" was formulated as an especial chronotope of Other which produces the identities and experiences of the Other. The heterotopia promotes expansion of culture and transgresses self-consciousness and borders, and there otherness is considered as a resource of development and transformations. The practical significance of the thesis is an opportunity to use materials of Dissertation research for development of educational strategies and the cultural actions. The theoretic and methodic ideas can be used for studies of the Western and Post-soviet philosophies, as a basis for a textbook for the students and post-graduate students for special courses "Theory of the Other in Postmodernist philosophy", "Critical philosophies of the 20th century", "Theory and history of genocide", "Queer-theory as academic discipline", "Woman in popular culture: gender analysis", for lectures in Ukrainian culture, philosophy, ethics, aesthetics, mythology, culture of the 19th and 20th centuries.
