The dissertation is devoted to the first in Ukrainian science complex study of constitutional-legal status of one of the oldest and the most complicated state institutions – autonomous formations. Historical-legal analysis of their development in European countries that was based on the wide range of factual material was carried out. Variety of autonomous formations forms, principles of their creation and criteria of classification were observed.
