Essay

The dissertation is devoted to the research into the specific character of the artistic reproduction of the Bogdan Khmelnitski's historical epoch in the Russian romantic world-view. What is at issue is complicated and multi-aspect processes of the creative transformation of the folk, annalistic and historiographical traditions in the representation and literary interpretations of this historical period by the romanticists. What has been accomplished is the system analysis of texts, which belong to different genres (lyric, lyrical epic, prose and dramatic works) and are devoted to this subject, being created at different stages of functioning of the romantic artistic method. It is established that the texts above used to function as a metatext with certain ideological and figurative constants, stable dominant characteristics of events and historical figures. These texts are a specific semantic concentrate, within which a certain number of individual authors' interpretations is adduced. For the vast majority of Russia romanticists the Khmelnitski's epoch is an idealized and mythologized historical period, with which the conception of the Ukrainian golden age is associated. It is not just a heroic age of glory and military triumph caused by dispensation, but a new bench mark in the history of the Cossacks and the whole future history of the country.
