Essay

Subject: The Theoretical bases for the formation of the National bank of grain legumes (peas, soybeans, kidney-beans, chick-pea and lentil) genetic resources and the ways of its practical use. Purpose: the theoretical substantiation and the elaboration of theoretical approaches to the formation of the bank of grain legume genetic resources in Ukraine, singling out valuable samples of peas, soybeans, kidney-beans, chick-pea and lentil varieties for the specific tasks of breeding. Methods: field, laboratory, statistical. Novelty: For the first time in Ukraine an important scientific problem of the substantiation of the theoretical bases for the formation of the gene bank of grain legume cultivars was solved; its potential and ways of application in breeding were ascertained. The methodical grounds for the formation of databases and collections as well as for the selection of valuable traits sources and their effective usage in breeding were elaborated. The determination of the regions of purposeful introduction of initial material for replenishing the base collection as a constituent of the National Bank of plant genetic resources of Ukraine was grounded. The biological and economic characteristics of the introduced wild and homogeneous species and their plant-breeding value were determined. The strategy of the maintenance directions and sample losses risk reduction by means of long-term storage at low temperatures and maintenance duplication in the depositories of different countries were worked out. The effectiveness of using the selected sources of valuable properties in the process of creating new cultivars of peas, soybeans and kidney-beans was established. Results: On the basis of theoretical, methodical and systematic studies the bank of grain legume genetic resources as well as the base collections of genetic resources of peas, soybeans, kidney-beans, chick-pea and lentil in number of 9015 samples was generated. Three characteristic collections, five special collections and fifteen educational ones were formed. In the collections the sources of valuable for breeding properties were defined. Two educational manuals: "The Identification of Properties of Grain Legume Cultivars (Peas, Soy Beans)", "The Identification of Properties of Grain Legume Cultivars (Kidney-Beans, Chick-Pea and Lentil)" and the manual chapter "Special breeding and seedage of field varieties" were published. Four state standards were formulated. Eleven pea cultivars were created with the participation of the candidate; six soybean cultivars and two kidney-bean cultivars were created by the candidate. Degree of implementation: Three of the five base collections, three characteristic collections and four special collections of peas, soybeans, kidney-beans, chick-pea and lentil have been granted the Copyright Certificate of NCPGRU. The sources of valuable traits singled out in the collections are widely used in breeding practice of the scientific research institutions of NAAS, the scientific seed-breeding firm "Soybean age", The All-Russia Research Institute of Legumes and Groat Crops, the Institute of Genetics and Cytology of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus, the Institute of Forage Crops of Bulgaria. The educational manuals are used in the educational process of agrarian universities and in the examination of cultivars by the State Service on Right Protection on Plant Varieties. The formulated state standards are applied during the process of seed quality assessment. The cultivars of peas, soybeans, kidney-beans created with candidate's partaking have been incorporated into agricultural production of Ukraine. Application area: breeding institutions.
