Bagan M. Category of Negation in Ukrainian Language : Functional-Semantic and Ethnolinguistic aspects

The dissertation represents the integral innovative research on functioning category of negation in the Ukrainian language. The category of negation is presented as the multi-layered thinking and speech category with exit in the sphere of communicative, psychic and cognitive activities of human. Poly-status character of the category of negation was grounded and its belonging to the modus categories and exit into the zone of functioning of communicative and cognitive categories were motivated. The dissertation provides wider typology of means of expressing negation, stressing the functional versatility of direct, indirect and implicit negation and highlighting specialized, narrowly specialized and non-specialized secondary means of negation. The set of grammatical units expressing negation in sentence is extended with the help of second grammatical means of negation and predicatives. The content of word-forming means of expressing negation was reconsidered and as a result, covered all the morphemes representing deep negative judgments (even if they were previously not negative), core components carrying homogenous negative meaning and peripheral components expressing wider content segments of the basis of negation, as well as new tendencies in the application of typical negative word-forming affixes.
