Essay

The thesis deals with the Harlem Renaissance, a movement and collection of important events in twentieth-century African American culture that touched every aspect of African-American artistic life: literature, music, theatre, musical theatre and the visual arts. Although the Harlem Renaissance was never a cohesive movement, its main task became racial self-assertion and self-definition in the situation of white supremacy. Black intellectuals and artists were searching for new aesthetics to express the historical experience of African Americans, and thus it became a way for African Americans to write themselves into the narrative of American identity.
