Essay

The dissertation presents research on current issues related to the construction of a democratic state and the formation of a civil society based on democratic principles - principles that must be enacted both constitutionally and legislatively in the process of constitutional reform in Ukraine. The author has formulated and provided reasoned definitions of the essential characteristics of categories and terms required to elaborate the concept (model) of direct/popular democracy, including: "government", "people", "democracy", "popular sovereignty", "subjects" and "types" of democracy, etc. The structure and primary elements of the mechanism of realization of democracy are defined within the text. Results of research on the substantive characteristics of the subjects of both direct and representative democracy are presented, together with an identification of problems and gaps in the constitutional and legal support for their activities and status.
