Essay

The dissertation represents the first innovative comprehensive study of the complex sentence system in the modern literary Ukrainian language from the standpoint of functional and categorical grammar, which demands a focus on comprehensive research of sentences as an integrated unity of formal-syntactic, semantic-syntactic, and communicative features. The dissertation analyzes the formal-grammatical and semantic-syntactic structure of complex sentences and classifies them into types. The formal- grammatical classification of complex sentences is made based on the technique of manifestation of subordinate predication, types of subordination connection between the predicative parts, and means of conjunction. In this area, three main types of complex sentences are identified: typical formal structure with sentence-dependent, word-dependent, and indirect subordinate clauses, symmetric and asymmetric cataphoric structures, and conjunctive structures. The most typical features of complex sentences represent structures with sentence-dependent subordination, which hold the central place in the system of complex sentences. The semi-periphery and periphery of complex sentences form structures with word-based subordinate clauses, which represent an intermediate type between the complex sentences proper and simple sentences. The extreme periphery of the complex sentences system is formed by the structures with indirect subordinate clauses.
