The given doctorate thesis analyzes the tendencies of the development of foreign languages teaching methodology in western Ukraine (the 2nd half of XIX century – the 1st half of the XX century). Theoretical and methodological bases of the research have been substantiated and the historiography of the study has been outlined. The approaches to determining the stages of development of foreign languages teaching methodology in western Ukraine in 1867-1939 have been characterized. The periodization of foreign languages teaching methodology in western region within the given period has been developed. Curricula, textbooks, scholarly articles on foreign languages teaching methodology for different types of schools in the period under study have been analyzed in order to determine the approaches, principles, methods of teaching foreign languages. Conceptual and methodological foundations of such methods of foreign languages teaching as translation, direct, and mixed methods, and the peculiarities of their imp lementation in western Ukraine have been disclosed. The comparative characterization of foreign languages teaching methodology in secondary schools in western Ukraine in the Russian Empire and the USSR has been made.
