Essay

Self-identity in American philosophy in the second half of the twentieth century. The author applies metaphysical, social, behavioural, existential, hermeneutical, communicative, analytical and postmodern approaches in study of the phenomenon of Self-identity in American philosophical tradition in the second half of the 20th century. The study defines specific characteristics of Self-identity and explores their manifestations in continental and American philosophy. An integrated approach to the study of Self-identity in American philosophical frameworks revealed the patterns in the phenomenon's interpretation by R. Rorty, Ch. Taylor, A. Macintyre, S. Huntington, J. Searl, D. Dennett, B. Skinner, and A. Loewen; it emphasised the role played by social, behavioural, communicative, analytical and postmodern determination in the context of identity, and influencing the modern individual's motivation to live.
