The dissertation is dedicated to the comprehensive historical and legal research of the sources and the evolution of the public control over the penitentiary system of Ukraine. The structure, contents and the correlation of the notions of social, formal (performed by the state authorities) and informal (performed by the public) control have been determined, making the grounds for the definition of the scientific and cognitive ways of studying the phenomenon of the public control over the penitentiary system.
