The thesis researches development trends of teacher education in the European Union of the 90s of XX - beginning of XXI century. The development of teacher education in the European Union in the context of formal and informal education, the problem of education systems development in the EU countries in pedagogical theory is analyzed. The concept and scientific thesaurus of the study of teacher education development in the EU is proposed. The classification of the EU countries on the similarity of teacher education development and the criteria for such classification is grounded. The development of teacher education in Western Europe, Central and Eastern European countries, the Baltic and Mediterranean countries is analyzed; the trends of teacher education in these countries are identified. The criteria for comparison of teacher education development in the EU are defined. The comparative analysis of the development of teacher education in the European Union is implemented. Application of EU experience in the system of teacher education in Ukraine is identified and systematized.
