Essay

The thesis research object is Ukrainian Baroque literature courses. The work is based upon a study of more than a hundred manuscripts - national textbooks on poetic art (poetics) and eloquence (rhetorics) of XVII-XVIII centuries. The purpose of research is the reconstruction of the old Ukrainian theory of literary funeral genres (epitaph, epicedium, nenia-laments, threnody, mourning elegy, funeral speech, elogium, funeral letter) by studying the rules of their creation (guidelines) and examples which are given in old Ukrainian poetics and rhetoric and performed genealogic function. To form a vision of the theory of funeral literature, various methods were used: historical und cultural method, comparative, intertextuality and intermediality analysis. Scientific novelty of the thesis is following: the funeral topic, that was important for baroque people, were discussed on the basis of literary material of two centuries of school theory of the poetry and eloquence; key directions of research of Ukrainian poetics and rhetorics of that time has been specified; based on the investigating of textual sources, the new research in the field of the study of ancient Ukrainian poetics and rhetoric were defined; a series of texts that have never been the object of scientific study were involved to the study; some original texts, as well as versed and prosaic translations from Latin and Polish, are published for the first time; as a result of textual analysis of funeral speech examples, authorship and publication dates of some rhetoric textbooks are disputed.
