For the first time in Ukrainian linguistics the suggested thesis (monograph) performs a complex investigation of the history of generation, formation, development and functioning of the Ukrainian literary language in Galicia from the beginning of the XIXth century till the year of 1939. The analysis of activities of representatives of Galicia intellectuals, interested in the literary language development, characteristics of linguistic works by Galicia authors in chronological order allowed to trace the evolution of grammatical thought in Galicia, to show dynamic processes which were occuring to the language, changes in views on the language, on its functioning. For the first time on a broad scale of facts there are described language discussions among representatives of different views on the language development, between supporters of phonetic and etymological principles of writing, the so-called "abc war" is described in detail, the language of publications of different temporal periods of the XIXth century is analyzed, due to which positive changes in the language, in its formation as the language of literature are revealed. The research traces the role of certain personalities in formation and codification of the literary language, conscious intrusion of leaders in science and culture into shaping grammatical, stylistic, spelling standards. A concise review of the discussions of the end of the XIXth - the beginning of the XXth centuries between scholars of Galicia and Eastern Ukraine as to spelling standards arrangement is given. There is an analysis of the whole range of primary sources, materials, articles, grammar works, which even now for objective reasons for scholars and the general reader are difficult to access. It is stated that at the end of the ХІХth century, when Ukrainian outstanding writer I. Franko entered literature, a western Ukrainian version of the Ukrainian literary language was already quite self-sufficient and suitable for using in all spheres of social life, could attend to all styles of the Ukrainian national language.
