Essay

The research identifies the author's conceptions of translations in the second half of the 20th century as well as identifies key problems of the scientific research from the perspective of comparative studies. Translation has been considered not only from the point of view of its theoretical and practical problems related to interlingual asymmetry, typology, transformational process, equivalence / adequacy, pragmatic invariants but also in the context of its creative mission in the target literature. This is the first systematic work that gives a broad outline of Ukrainian translations of the 1960s and their interrelationship with the literary process of the period in question introducing a number of unknown names and figures. Based on the analysis of English prose translations and, in particular, materials collected in private archives and publishing funds the book reveals the authors' concepts of translation presented by R. Dotsenko, Y. Lysnyak, M. Dmytrenko, V. Mytrofanov and traces rhetoric strategies engaged by the authors to translate target texts. The thesis provides a comparative analysis of artistic translation finding relevant features within the analogy between the development of comparative studies and translation as a form interliterary relations as well defining terminology system of comparative literature in accordance with basic principles of phenomenology, structuralism, personology, semiotics, receptive aesthetics, hermeneutics, post-colonial studies etc.). It accentuates philosophical and aesthetic background and the impact of diverse factors on the creation of aesthetic canon of the Ukrainian prose in the second half of the twentieth century presented by a variety of genres and genre modifications. Employing different literary theory approaches, this work introduces an intercultural model of translation, focusing on penetrating into the contextual space of the "Other" and conducts an interpretive content analysis of Ukrainian translations of English prose by defining genre scenes projections reflected in them, filling gaps in its artistic space and defining the place of the translator in a literary paradigm. The author gives a broad outline of the role of translations in the literary and critical discourse of the sixties basing on the analysis of both translations and materials from private archives and publishing assets, in particular, emphasizing the importance of R. Dotsenko's, Y. Lisnyak's, M. Dmytrenko's and V. Mytrofanov's translations in literary discourse of the second half the 20th century and identifying specific style, lexical and semantic correlations between them and target texts.
