Essay

The dissertation in the form of a monograph for the first time in Ukrainian linguistics is concerned with the stratigraphy research of archaic types geographic names of Ukraine (names ending in *-ьskъ (Буськ), *-ьn (Дубно), *-any/*-jany (Вижняни), *-itji (Мислятичі), *-j(ь) (Добромиль), *-ovъ/*-evъ (Ожидів), *-inъ (Малин). The study dwells on the place names found in historical sources with the year and century indication of each geographic name. The list of place names is compiled according to diachronic fixation. Semasiologic and structural analysis has been carried out on derivation stems of archaic place names embracing two main sources i.e. Proper names and appellative ones currently not always commonly used. Some common names transformed into anthroponyms. They were often a part of the composite names. It has been established that Ukrainian archaic place names represent a wide All-Slavonic anthroponymic complex. It has been proved that a substantial percentage of Slavonic origin anthroponyms (compositives, cut-compositives, shortened and affix-complicated compositives) actually functions nowadays only as place names derivation stems. It was caused by certain social, historical and lingual factors due to which there exists a great number of geographic names derived from Christian names having been not only adapted phonetically but also widened with affixes characteristic of Ukrainian anthroponymy.
