The hydronym system of the Dnister river basin was formed during long period of time that caused the appearing in it genetically and chronologically different names of hydroobjects. The Slavic layer of the Dnister river hydronymy is the largest because Naddnistrianshchyna is one of the oldest territories where Slavic ethnos was formed. The non-Slavic layer of the Dnister river basin hydronymy is divided into two groups: 1) Eastern Romance hydronyms (Romanian and Moldovan); 2) genetically Turkic hydronyms.
