The essence and structural elements of the monetary system, its functional designation and types are determined. The global and national evolution of the monetary system depending on economic and political circumstances is outlined. The views of foreign and domestic scholars of the theoretical and practical principles of the monetary system functioning are analyzed. Criteria of assessing the level of efficiency of the monetary system functioning are elaborated. Conceptual principles of efficient functioning of the monetary system are developed.
