Essay

The thesis presents a systemic study of subtext poetics revealing features in the literary and artistic systems of the West and the East from the comparative analysis perspective; the functioning of subtext in literature and other art forms has been explored by way of contrastive approach. For the first time in the Ukrainian literary studies, the subtext theory as a source of the artistic energy has been created. Available definitions of subtext have been analyzed and systematized in order to enrich the conception of its nature. The subtext as a general art thing and the subtext functioning in different kinds of art, namely, oratory, theatre, cinema, painting, and music, have been described. The methodological principles of the subtext analysis in fiction have been worked out. The effective methodology for the subtext poetics analysis are the systemic approach, the methodology of receptive poetics, and the slow reading of the artistic text. The functioning of subtext in the Persian literature has been analyzed, and exemplified by Omar Khayyam’s rubais that have implied meanings, the decoding of which displays a variety of interpretations. The key categories of the Sanskrit poetics have been examined, such as rasa, dhvani, and dhvani-rasa, confirming the extraordinary significance of subtext meanings in the oral culture. The depicted world of flora and fauna in «The Shi Jing» is used for intensifying the informational loading and mood of works by using certain archetype meanings of one image or another. Religious motives often come through the poetic images: Chan Buddhism set of ideas are hidden in Wang Wei’s landscape lyrics, and Taoism set of ideas – in Li Bai’s wine poetry.
