Essay

The dissertation outlines the subject and tasks of cognitive linguistics, projecting the processes of phraseological meaning as well as sense formation. The most important views of modern Ukrainian and foreign linguists on the nature of concept have been characterized. The correlation of conceptual and language representations in cognitive semantics has also been described. The conceptual, ethnic and phraseological world models as derivatives of national mentalities have been under consideration. Basic problems of phraseology study in current linguistics have been elucidated. The material under study testifies to the fact, that phrases reproduce the most versatile manifestations of human existence: positive and negative features as well as actions, appearance, time, space, family relations. Important constituents of phrases are key word-symbols in which we come across history, the spirit of the people, their eternal aspiration for perfection. The development of phraseological meaning has been analyzed on the material of Ukrainian phrases against the background of the above mentioned foreign languages to bring to light both universal regularities of cognitive processes and their national specificity. In addition to it, the national peculiarities of cognitive models have been established. This is especially topical for the study of phraseological units which are the exponents of spiritually valuable cultural components as a form of ethnocultural consciousness functioning.
