Kovtun A. Semantic derivatives in the Ukrainian religious vocabulary: creation, development and modern functioning

This thesis is a complex diachronic-synchronic analysis of origination and development of polysemy of the Ukrainian religious lexemes in the general functional and individual speech practice. According to lexicographical sources, in modern Ukrainian there are words with meanings acquired from the religious sphere through metonymization, semantic narrowing and metaphorization. Outside the religious sphere, according to the newest explanatory sources, religious nominations functioning in the Ukrainian language, are determinolized by metaphorization, expansion of the meaning and metonymization. The main sign of desacralization is the emergence of unusual for religious lexemes stylictic adherences. It was observed in the polemical literature of the XVIth and XVIIth centuries, but their effectiveness particularly increased in the 20th century, when the flavor of irony, mockery and scorn was firmly attached to the religious vocabulary – the fact that should not be regarded as a consequence of the language natural development.
