Essay

The dissertation explores how the Ukrainian identity is represented in the graphic design of Soviet Ukraine and the Ukrainian Diaspora in 1945–1989. The research relies on Soviet posters and covers of the periodicals of the Diaspora as well as archival documents and interviews with the authors to define the contexts in which the works were created, establish the semantics of the symbols used for the visual representation of the Ukrainian identity, describe the means used to create the images of Ukraine and Ukrainians, and analyze the stylistics of the pictures and its connection with the artistic and design trends of the 20th century.
