Essay

Creative activities of the artists-universalist are one of the most debatable and yet least understood topics among the broad issues of art correspondence. The twenties and the thirties of the last century were particularly prolific in these talents. Such renowned artists as S. Hordynsky, V. Havryliuk, I. Krushelnytsky turned to poetry in Galicia at that time. There were so-called Doppelbegabungen (double talents) of Ukrainian origin in emigration too (V. Khmeliuk, H. Mazurenko, O. Lyaturynska). A talented graphic artist, carver and painter, V. Masiutyn and a famous artist from Transcarpathia, A. Erdeli, excelled in their prose works. Of interest are the memoirs of O. Hryshchenko. Noteworthy is that the work of the majority of them has not yet become the data for systematic comparative literature study. Therefore, narrow examination of our writersartists’ poetics in connection with the study of massive problems of their work in related art in the evolution of talent reveals surprising nuances of their creative portraits, so important in the historical and literary aspect. The study makes allowance for the diachronic (national) and synchronous (intercultural) aspects of the bi-professionals’ practical experience propagation. The task of the thesis is regulated by its main goal – the study of poetic features of the Ukrainian writers-artists’ different genre literary estate in the intermediality realm, which allows to underscore the links between literature and fine arts of the interwar period in the general cultural European context as well as to conceptualize them as aesthetic and artistic impulses in the further development of literature. The academic originality of the work lies in the fact that for the first time in the Ukrainian literature studies the notion of intermedial strategy is conceptualized, on the theoretical basis of which the creative work of bi-professional artists has been explored. Innovative is the artistic universalism issue articulation (first of all, the interaction of two types of creativity – literature and fine arts), through which both individual artistic personalities and the literary process of the relevant period in the context of art interconnectedness have been revealed. The phenomenon of double talents is fundamentally the comparative cultural studies issue, which implies the analysis of two artistic components in unity. A new approach to the study of the phenomenon of interaction between literature and fine arts has been introduced; it refers to the pertinent artistic phenomena of the modern literary process. With reference to the western intermedial theories, our own classification has been developed, on the theoretical basis of which the study of the interwar writers-artists’ diverse literary estate has been rested on. For the first time, Sviatoslav Hordynsky’s multifaceted literary and artistic activity is considered from an intertextual point of view with the registration of evidentiary contacts between the arts. Artistic experience of the interwar Ukrainian literature has presented the interart issues on an extensive material of universalist artists and showed its attraction to interactive processes, which will be carried on and further developed in subsequent periods.
