For the first time a comprehensive study of the theory and methods of training future biology teachers to implement the functions of education for sustainable development is carried out. The stages of genesis of the concept of sustainable development and education for sustainable development are singled out. The current features of education for sustainable development are characterized. Training future biology teachers for implementing the functions of education for sustainable development is the formation of their professional competence. The ability to understand and implement the strategy of sustainable human development in the process of professional activity is a necessary component of future biology teachers’ professional competences. Such an element is an integrative and personal one, a combination of knowledge, skills and abilities, ways of thinking, professional, ideological and civic qualities, motives and values. In sum, those components determine the ability to implement the functions of education for sustainable development in the process of professional activity. The structure of this professional competence that is composed of cognitive, activity and personal components is determined and substantiated. The criteria are determined as informational, behavioral, value-evaluative ones, as well as the indicators and levels of competence formation (low, medium, sufficient, high). The concept, model and pedagogical system of training future biology teachers for implementing functions of education for sustainable development are developed. The effectiveness of the pedagogical system of future biology teachers’ training to implement the functions of education for sustainable development at the first level of higher education is substantiated and experimentally tested. The prognostic directions of future biology teachers training on the basis of education for sustainable development are determined.
