Essay

For the first time in Ukrainian literature studies, a comprehensive analysis of Ukrainian modern literary magazine as an intermedial text, the phenomenon of which is determined by the correlation between fictional (verbal and non-verbal, especially iconic) and non-fictional (literary-critical, journalistic, art studies related) discourses was conducted. For the first time also, a theoretical model of Ukrainian modern literary magazine as an intermedial text was formed and substantiated, and its specification, using the typology of metaphorical models, was proposed. The thesis includes four chapters: “Theoretical and methodological basis for the research of Ukrainian literary magazine as an intermedial text”, “Modeling of literary magazine as an intermedial text: theory and practice”, “The parameters of the theoretical model of Ukrainian modern literary magazine: modalities for operation”, and “Geocultural transgressions of intermediality: texts and codes”. The first chapter is dedicated to the selection and validation of the methodological basis for scientific research. Implementation of the intermedial theory as a methodology for research of Ukrainian modern literary magazine instigated its exploration as a multi-level structure with an interaction of units from different semiotic systems. The concept of “intermedial text”, characterized as a complex semiotic multi-level construct with levels of fictional and non-fictional discourses, and emerging after integration of verbal and non-verbal media, is used to indicate the phenomenon of the modern literary magazine. In the second chapter of the thesis, the literary magazine is reviewed as a textual construct with its proper form and content. Also, the theoretical model of Ukrainian modern literary magazine as an intermedial text, which is a multi-level hierarchic structure with a nonlinear order of verbal and visual texts interacting in a discursive space, was created and substantiated. Magazine as a text is the object of the discursive space, the collective author (author of a text, editor, artist, template designer) and the reader are the subjects. The suggested theoretical model is specified with the help of the identification of structural levels and configurations of metaphorical models – palimpsest, polylogue, lexicon, chronicle, and collage. In the third chapter of the thesis, the basic parameters of the theoretical model of Ukrainian modern literary magazine are determined, and their functional features are studied, in particular – temporal and spatial dimensions of the literary magazine were outlined, observations of the genre paradigm were systematized, particular characteristics of author and reader were revealed. Geocultural transgressions of intermediality in the modern literary magazine are represented in the fourth chapter of the thesis. It was demonstrated that the means of intermediality are crucial factors for the construction of the receptive cross-sections of cultural dialogue. The means of intermediality increase the quantity of the semiotic media, thus, the recipient gets an opportunity to respond to more natural channel and cultural code. It was observed that the extension of the message semantics occurs after the construction of the heterogenic text and the connection inside the space of the literary magazine of homo- and heterogenic texts. The practical value of the thesis lies in the opportunity to use the research materials for teaching of basic educational courses on literary theory and history, comparative literature studies, textual studies, history of modern journalistics, and for the particular courses and seminars on intermedial issues, modern literary process, for scientific researches of different types, for creation of textbooks and guides for high and middle school.
