Essay

A comparative study of the consistency of development and course of lipopolysaccharide periodontitis in rats with underlying hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism and without any concomitant pathology has been performed and the relationships between its features and thyroid status have been established. The research was based on study and evaluation of disorders of oral microbiocenosis, bone and connective tissue metabolism, cytokinogenesis, inflammation severity, functional and metabolic activity of neutrophils, rates of protein, carbohydrate and lipid metabolism, free radical oxidation, antioxidant defence, nitrogen (II) oxide and hydrogen sulfide systems, severity of endogenous intoxication, energy-supplying oxidation, generation of reactive oxygen intermediates and realization of programmed neutrophil death. Structural and ultrastructural features of periodontal complex changes in experimental lipopolysaccharide periodontitis with underlying hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism have been defined. It has been established that concomitant thyroid dysfunction probably exacerbates the course of experimental lipopolysaccharide periodontitis.
