Essay

The monograph deals with the creation and substantiation of a new humanitarian direction – dual linguistics: scientific and naive interpretation of language in the English lexicography. It is hypothesized that the interpretation of the phenomenon of language (together with the word and speech phenomena, as inseparable ones) in the conceptual and, accordingly, linguistic pictures of the world of average speaker and professional linguist is radically different. The study considers the complex concept WORD / LANGUAGE / SPEECH, which is verbalized by nominative units extracted from English general and special lexicographic sources, is considered. The two nominative fields of the studied concept are formed, separately for the naive and for the scientific pictures of the world. We offer a new method of compiling the following fields: in the naive version it is achieved through extracting from vocabularies all nominative units containing the semes language, word, speech, communication, while in the scientific version it is done through combining the nuclear units word, language, speech with all other vocabulary units, to which nuclear articles direct the user through a ramified network of internal links radially dispersed from each nuclear article. We claim that various discourse patterns are being implied, according to which general and special dictionaries are to be used. There is a presupposition of the user’s proper academic thesaurus in various linguistic issues, otherwise his communication will fail due to the polemic and polyaspected character of dictionary articles. The verbalized concept WORD / LANGUAGE / SPEECH is described in a comparative perspective as it is presented within the naive and the scientific pictures of the world
