Essay

Transdisciplinary geoecology is substantiated as a holistic science concentrated on the geospatial dimension of ecological processes. It is based on the geospatial and ecological approaches, is realized by geomatics techniques, and it supports management of ecosystem services in close cooperation with stakeholders. This study pioneers with several new concepts and approaches described below. General definition of the contents of transdisciplinary geoecology is provided based on the analysis of its scientific, technological, and societal preconditions. Firstly, we interpreted notions of scientific objects and subjects from the standpoint of transdisciplinarity and the theory of process and complex systems. Secondly, we analyzed different interpretations of geoecology and compared them with other geographical sciences to detect numerous “doppelgangers”. Thirdly, geospatial and ecological approaches were interpreted from the standpoint of the systems theory and geomatics techniques. Fourthly, we studied effects of current social situation and environmental legislation on the development of geoecology.
