Essay

The dissertation substantiates the methodological foundations of the formation, use and preservation of urban public spaces, which are considered as a holistic systemic phenomenon and have an interdisciplinary nature with the relevant criteria of territorial and spatial value and integrity. The study examines the open public spaces and interiors of museum complexes, the spatial structure of which was formed in the process of historical development of the city. The formation of public spaces in the process of historical development of cities was considered; the evolutionary changes were systematized and the regularities of their development were determined, on this basis the typology of public spaces was proposed. Methods of spatial analysis, spatial syntax and basic configuration models of open and interior public spaces have been developed and applied. The influence of the degree of integration of public space and its configuration on social activity and function was substantiated and determined. The results of theoretical research were substantiated and verified on the examples of the main squares of large cities, in particular, the city center of Kyiv, and the interior spaces of museums, cultural, educational and other public complexes. The modern strategy and scientific and methodical bases of regeneration, adaptation, use and design of public spaces from the point of view of their social function were developed and the principles of preservation of urban public spaces in the context of the concept of sustainable development were defined. According to the results of the research the methodology of research and formation of urban public spaces was improved, which allowed to reveal regularities of influence of their configurations on social activity of the population and function of open and interior public spaces. The final stage of the research was the concept of formation and preservation of urban public spaces in accordance with their configuration, degree of integration and historical and cultural value.
