Essay

The dissertation is devoted to the diachronic study of football vocabulary of the Ukrainian language from the birth of football in Ukraine in the second half of the XIX century and until now, the history of formation, development and functioning of Ukrainian football vocabulary has been comprehensively studied, sociolinguistic analysis of its formal and informal use in various areas connected with football hase been carried out. The author's definition of football discourse as a separate subspecies of sports discourse has been formulated. This discourse has a specific thematic focus, is focused on a specific addressee, uses a specific arsenal of language tools and is a set of texts of different genres, styles which have different communicative directions. This discourse is a product of speech in football. The formation of Ukrainian football terminology as the main marker of official football discourse began in the late nineteenth century, and the most intensive period of formation of the system of names to denote football concepts falls on the first third of the ХХ century, when football spread widely in Ukraine. The development of national football terminology took place in Ukraine due to specific socio-political circumstances in two parallel directions: in Dnieper Ukraine – with significant colonial influences of the Russian terminological tradition, and in Western Ukraine – with clearly emphasized national approaches to term formation. In the West of Ukraine, the resources of the Ukrainian language were used primarily for naming football concepts, when commonly used words were given a special term meaning or football nominations were created on the basis of word-forming resources – creative bases and affixes. Most of the foreign terms had Ukrainian equivalents, sometimes they were extensive synonymous series of competing specific names, which is a noticeable feature of the non codification of the Ukrainian football terminology of that time.
