Essay

The dissertation provides a comprehensive study of figurative motivation as an important component of word-forming semantics, which is realized in the motivational relations of substantive figurative morphological derivatives (nouns, adjectives, verbs, adverbs) and reflects the features of derivational processes of the Ukrainian language. The complex method of motivational and semantic-cognitive analysis of substantive derivatives is applied in the research, due to which figurative motivation is identified as an independent type of cognitive-linguistic relations between the motivating word and the motivated word. It is proposed to divide these relations into: 1) figurative-metaphorical; 2) figurative-metonymic and 3) figurative-paradoxical ones. It is proposed to distinguish two types of noun derivative units: proper figurative derivatives and figurative derivatives in the structure of a polysemant. It is determined that for figurative derivation of nouns, adjectives, verbs and adverbs the highest productivity is shown by figurative-metaphorical motivational relations, the basis of which is a complex figurative representation formed through universal metaphorical models – artifact and natural-morphological (mostly remorphic, zoomorphic and phytomorphic) ones. It determined that figurative motivational relations have a significant semantic potential, realize it in word-forming processes and influence the system-forming properties of figurative derivatives – their ability to be grouped into word-forming types and paradigms. For the first time in Ukrainian linguistics the important role of figurative derivation in the development and enrichment of synonymy of the Ukrainian language is substantiated. Keywords: substantive figurative derivatives, proper figurative derivatives, figurative derivatives in the structure of a polysemant, typology of figurative motivational relations, word-forming meaning of "similarity", figurative component of meaning, word-forming type, motivational model, metaphorical and metonymical conceptual models, associative lexical word-forming figurative paradigm, synonymy of figurative derivatives.
