Essay

For the first time in Ukrainian linguistics, the thesis comprehensively investigates the structure and semantics of fishing names in the historical aspects and current interpretation through the prism of the material and spiritual culture of Ukrainians. The genetic connections of fishing vocabulary and phraseology with lexis of other ancient crafts are revealed. This process is based on the author's essential-motivational approach (EMA) according to O. Potebnia’s views on sensory perceptions in terms of the historical evolution of thinking, which authorized the development of a new scientific direction – gene-synchronous polydiscursive terminology. The place of subject-nominative and figurative-expressive fishing names in Ukrainian linguistic world image is determined according to the principles of EMA. The suggested essence-motivational typology, based on the essential features of fishing realities as pre-nominational conceptual first nomens, made it possible to distinguish motivational types of fishing names by: auditory perception (sounds of contact of a fish body with water; sounds of contact of fishing tackle with water); visual observation (color of the fish body or color of the visible part of the fish body); tactile perception (feeling the fish to the touch); taste perception (taste of fish); constant visual observation (temporary sign of fish spawning; place of permanent residence of fish; direction of fish migration; name of fish fished by the fisherman; name of fishing tackle used by the fisherman; name of the fished fish by the fishing tackle; material of the fishing tackle; natural tackle; natural action inherent in man; noticeable species of fish in the designated place of fishing); active practical knowledge (name of fishing tackle used in fishing; name of action performed by the fisherman; the mesh size of the net; the nature of the fisherman’s action on the fishing tackle; the nature of the fisherman’s action in the designated place of fishing); mental generalization of the essence (type of action, process). The internal syncretism of the fishing names' development is evidenced by cross-motivational bases (two types of motivational bases that mutually enrich the lexical-semantic groups of fishing names of the same name), which form the percentage of the structural parts of the motivational core of the lexical-semantic field (LSF) «Fishery», where the determinant is the total cross-section for the most important categories of fishing life: fish (27%), tackle (24%), process (19.5%), location (19.5%), fishing (10%). It is possible to trace the formation of motivational core systems of other LSFs according to the proposed mechanism for determining the structure of the motivational core, which will make it possible to determine the percentage of conceptual categories in the Ukrainian linguistic world image.
