The dissertation reproduces an objective picture of the rise of domestic astronomical science on a regional scale by studying the formation and development of astronomy in Kharkiv at the end of the 19th century – the first half of the 20th century in the sociocultural context. It was one of defining periods when there happened a rapid breakthrough in the development of astronomical science: the new theoretical and practical foundations were laid which produced the transition of astronomical science from observational (optical) to experimental. Representatives of the Kharkiv Astronomical Observatory and the University Department of Astronomy made an important contribution to the Rise of Ukrainian astronomy; at that time, their works in the field of physics and chemistry of the Moon, large and small planets of the Solar System were highlyappreciated and received worldwide recognition from the scientific community. The degree of reliability of the reflection of the process of institutionalization of astronomical research in Kharkiv within certain chronological framework in works on the history of Ukrainian and Soviet astronomy and the history of Kharkiv University has been determined. The conducted analysis of the historiography of the problem indicates the absence of studies that fully or in part reveal the essence of the process of institutionalization of astronomical research in Kharkiv within certain chronological limits. Instead, the existing historiographic base accumulates publications that operate on well-known facts, fragmentarily and selectively reproducing the chronology of the existence of the University Observatory. At the same time, the factor of influence of social processes on astronomical research at Kharkiv University remains outside the main attention of scientists; for instance, the involvement of University astronomers in the political and military events of the period of the Ukrainian revolution; conducting political ‘purges’ and repressions by NKVD in the University Observatory in the 1930s, etc. The research used a wide range of archival material carriers of information presented by documents of personal origin and official records from funds of archival, museum, and library institutions from Ukraine, Canada, Germany, the russian federation, and the USA. Considering the significant geographical dispersion of documentary monuments in various storage bases, most of the materials accumulated in the thesis were introduced into scientific circulation for the first time. As a result of the conducted research, the prerequisites that prepared the process of institutionalization of astronomical research in Kharkiv University were highlighted; the main milestones of the formation and development of astronomical science in Kharkiv during 1883–1945 were reconstructed. Based on the analysis of the main components (organizational, functional, and personified) of the process of institutionalization of astronomical research in Kharkiv, their internal structural distribution was conducted. According to the author’s periodization, in order to reveal the organizational component of the said process, three general periods of the development of astronomy were allocated within certain chronological limits, the reference points of which were the establishment of the permanent Astronomical Observatory of Kharkiv University; creation of the Research Department of Astronomy of the Kharkiv Institute of Public Education and its unification with the Astronomical Observatory; organization of the Department of Astronomy of Kharkiv State University; recovery and reconstruction of Observatory buildings after the events of the German-Soviet War (1941–1945). As a part of the study, the scientific biographies of some University astronomers whose names were considered lost to the history of science, and the biographies of a number of astronomy amateurs who significantly influenced the development of astronomical science in Kharkiv were reconstructed. An objective and holistic coverage of all components of institutional transformations is presented, the main regularities in the progress of domestic astronomical science, characteristic of the historical period of research, are revealed. This contributed to the deepening of the comprehensive analysis of the process of institutionalization of astronomical research and ensured the periodization of the formation and development of astronomy in Kharkiv. The peculiarities of the organization of observations, formation and transformation of the subject of scientific programs at the Kharkiv Astronomical Observatory have been clarified. The contribution of Kharkiv astronomers to the comprehensive study of physical conditions on the surfaces of the Moon, the Sun, planets and the interstellar medium, which was embodied in the birth of the Kharkiv Scientific School of Planetology, was revealed.
