The dissertation elucidates the statehood basis - Ukraine's military building at the beginning of the XX-th century. The author investigates the historical aspects of making, organization, activity and development of the Armed Forces of the Ukrainian Central Rada (Council) of the Hetmanate, Directorate, WUNR (the West Ukrainian National Republic), USSR (the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic). The Sichovi Striltsi Legion, as an important factor in the formation of the Ukrainian Army, has also become the object of analysis. Special attention is given to the legal foundations of creation and activity of the military administration bodies, justice, education and other military structures. Making use of legislative, monographic and archive materials, the author of the dissertation has made the first thorough attempt in the historico-legal science to present UAF (the Ukraine's Armed Forces) of the foregoing period in a single monograph. Each subsection of the dissertation is rounded off by the conclusions and practical suggestions how to perfect the armed forces.
