Essay

The dissertation is devoted to a comprehensive analysis of the church-religious and public activities of Anatoly Dublyansky (1912–1997), the Metropolitan of the Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox Church (UAOC) in the Diaspora. In the history of science, biographical research remains to be important. Researchers, using modern approaches and extensive methodological tools, have revived the names of many public, cultural and ecclesiastical figures once consigned to oblivion. Thus, the name of Metropolitan of the Ukrainian Orthodox Autocephalous Church in the Diaspora Anatoly Dublyansky could be fairly included in the cohort of spiritual leaders of the Ukrainian people. It is extremely important to pay attention to the figure of the hierarch, due the fact that he engraved his name in the Ukrainian cultural as a local historian, as well as a museum worker. During the war years and in the post-war emigration period he was an active figure in the UAOC in the diaspora: worked as a parish priest, editor of the official publication of the UAOC in the diaspora "Native Church", church administrator, and later bishop of the Ukrainian church in Western Europe. The study of the biographical data of Metropolitan Anatoly is of an immense value for the study of socio-political, cultural, scientific and religious life both in Ukraine and abroad in the diaspora. The source base of the work is representative, quite sufficient for the implementation of the tasks and is represented by various sources, especially the creative heritage of A. Dublyansky, documentary and narrative sources from the archives of Ukraine and the United States, libraries, periodicals of Ukraine and the Ukrainian diaspora in Western Europe. A significant part of the sources that cover the activities of Metropolitan Anatoly and the life of the Ukrainian diaspora was introduced into scientific circulation for the first time. The scientific significance of the results of the dissertation is that it was proved for the first time that during the 1930-1940s. A. Dublyansky became one of the most productive researchers and popularizers of Ukrainian local history, studying the monuments of Volyn, updating the biographies of prominent figures of the region; it was discovered and confirmed that A. Dublyansky initiated the preservation of the collection of paintings of the Radziwill princes from their family castle in Olyka and their transfer to the funds of the Volyn Museum of Local Lore; it was found out that A. Dublyansky contacted O. Kosach-Kryvyniuk during the war and insisted on recording her memories of Lesya Ukrainka. These memories were published in the newspaper "Ukrainian Voice"; all the aspects of A. Dublyansky’s local history journalism in the interwar period and the years of German occupation have been described; it has been confirmed that the journal "Native Church" the publication of which was initiated and carried out by A. Dublyansky, became the semi-official newspaper of the UAOC in Western Europe, played the role of the information platform of Orthodox Ukrainian representatives in the world, served as a factor in the mobilization of believers in emigration, became a source of important information about the development of the Ukrainian Church in the diaspora; it has been proved that Metropolitan Anatoly Dublyansky became the spiritual leader of the Orthodox Ukrainian community in Western Europe during the 70-90s. XX century; the views of Metropolitan Anatoly regarding the institutionalization and autocephaly of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church have been examined. The argumentation of the factors that determined the religious and national identification of A. Dublyansky was also improved and supplemented; a number of key biographical moments from A. Dublyansky's life have been specified; the most complete list of local history publications by A. Dublyansky has been currently concluded. The following statements received further development: the thought that the beginning of church-religious activity of A. Dublyansky was connected with the participation in the work of the Society named after Petro Mohyla and the council under Metropolitan Polikarp Sikorsky; the statement that it was A. Dublyansky who insisted on the creation of the Ukrainian Orthodox church-religious journal "Native Church" which later for several decades served as a unifying link between the hierarchy, clergy and flock. Conceptual generalizations, factual material of scientific work can be used in the preparation of generalizing and reference works on the history of Ukraine and church, local lore publications.
