Essay

The dissertation gives a retrospective analysis of the foreign language training of future teachers of non-philological specialties, which was carried out during the second half of the 20th and at the beginning of the 21st century. On this basis, the author identifies promising directions and pedagogical conditions for enhancing the process of professionally oriented teaching of foreign languages in higher education institutions in Ukraine. The work describes the scientific and theoretical foundations of the research and defines its conceptual and categorical framework. The following scientific approaches were used to study the process of organizing and implementing foreign language training of future teachers of non-philological specialties over the specified period: systemic, activity-based, personality-oriented and competence-based. The author ascertains the essence and content of the main terms of the conceptual-categorical apparatus, such as: «professionally oriented teaching of foreign languages», «foreign language professional competence», «communicative competence», «intercultural competence». Based on the most significant characteristics, the author’s definition of foreign language training of future teachers of non-philological specialties is proposed as a systemic organized process of orienting the goal, content, forms, methods and means of teaching and upbringing to the future pedagogical specialty, which contributes to the development of professionally oriented knowledge, skills and knowledge in students through foreign language skills of cultural and mental activity, increases the level of their communicative and intercultural competences. The result of such an educational process allows pedagogical universities graduates to effectively perform professional functions and tasks including the use of a foreign language. The author finds out that the foreign language training of future teachers of non-philological specialties involves the integration of a foreign language with social, humanitarian and professionally oriented academic disciplines in order to obtain supplementary professional knowledge and skills for graduates of pedagogical higher educational institutions that contribute to the formation of professionally important competencies and personal qualities. On the one hand, a foreign language acts as an important factor in personal development and on the other, an effective means of increasing the level of professional competence, the invariant components of which are communicative and intercultural competence, which carries out in practice foreign language communication in various spheres and situations of professional and pedagogical activity.
