Object of the study: the church as a social institution in the context of the famine strategy of the totalitarian regime during the Soviet modernization. Subject of the study: the destructive changes in the religious and church component of the Ukrainian society under the influence of the Holodomor of 1932-1933 as a purposeful multifactorial destructive action of the Soviet regime and the resistance of the believing part of the population to repressive policies. Purpose of the study: to establish the nature and scale of the Holodomor-genocide tragedy for the church organizations in Ukraine, the strategies for survival and resistance of the church and the believers in the conditions of the formation of Soviet totalitarianism. Results of the study: the dynamic connection of anti-religious and famine strategies of the authorities aimed at pacifying the Ukrainian people was shown. A systematic analysis of destructive changes in the church and traditional religiosity in Ukraine under the influence of the Holodomor-genocide of 1932-1933 was carried out. The scale of destruction of church institutions by the Holodomor-genocide was determined. Historical reconstruction was carried out, and spiritual and religious everyday life during the Holodomor was highlighted. The changes in the forms of resistance of religious communities were shown. The influence of repressive measures of power on changes in the social and psychological position of the clergy and believers was revealed. The article describes the administrative restrictions on the activities of religious organizations, the economic pressure of the state authorities on the clergy and religious communities during the Holodomor. Scope of application: the results obtained can be used in the preparation of special and generalizing works, training courses on the history of Ukraine, social anthropology in the higher education system, in the preparation of university courses, special courses and practical classes on the modern history of Ukraine and religious studies.
