The dissertation is a comprehensive scholarly historical study, which, based on the analysis of representative sources and the application of modern methodological principles, examines the intellectual heritage of the famous Ukrainian local historian and educator Mykhailo Fedorovych Ponomarenko (1920–2010). The scientific novelty of the dissertation research is that for the first time in Ukrainian historiography, on the basis of a representative source base, the most important milestones in the life and directions of M. Ponomarenko’s scholarly activity are comprehensively studied. The main factors that influenced the formation and transformation of the personality of the scholar, educator and public figure in the Soviet and post-Soviet periods are characterised. The content and evolution of the theoretical and methodological foundations of M. Ponomarenko's scholarly research in the context of ideological markers of the era are determined. The paper analyses M. Ponomarenko’s contribution to the topical research in biographical, bibliographical, literary and artistic areas of Shevchenko studies in Cherkasy region in the 1950s–1990s. The scholarly legacy of M. Ponomarenko and his original vision of addressing topical issues of toponymy of Zolotonosha district in particular and Cherkasy region in general are systematised and characterised. The national historiography of the problem is analysed and its periodisation is developed: I – 1952–1986; II – 1987–1 January 2010; III – 2 January 2010–present day. The dissertation source base, represented by a significant number of sources of personal origin, epistolary and manuscript heritage, a large layer of which is stored in the archival repositories of Ukraine, is characterized: State Archives of Cherkasy Region, Cherkasy (fonds: F.–931, F.R.–4178, F.R.–4468, F.R.–5428), the Central State Archives of Supreme Bodies of Power and Government of Ukraine, Kyiv (fonds: F.4633, F.4760), the Central State Archives Museum of Literature and Arts of Ukraine (fonds: 184, 1198, 1360); the NAS of Ukraine, the Scientific Archives of the Institute of Archeology, Kyiv (fonds: 1947–64/71, 1984/63), Institute of Manuscripts, V. Vernadsky National Library of Ukraine, Kyiv (fond: F. –113). Most of the archival materials analyzed in this paper are brought into scientific circulation for the first time. The paper analyses the historical and literary works of M. Ponomarenko, which are kept in the collections of the T. Shevchenko Cherkasy Universal Scientific Library, the M. Maksymovych Scientific Library at the Bohdan Khmelnytsky National University of Cherkasy, and the M. Ponomarenko Zolotonosha Museum of Local Lore (the town of Zolotonosha). The analysis of this group of sources made it possible to highlight the main results of M. Ponomarenko's research on topical issues of Shevchenko studies, toponymy, archeology, museum-and-monument-protection activities, and history of Zolotonosha and Zolotonosha district. The methodological tools of the dissertation research include three components: conceptual and terminological apparatus, research principles and methods of cognition. The reconstruction of M. Ponomarenko’s life and scholarly heritage was carried out based on general scientific, special-historical methods, in compliance with the principles of historicism, objectivity, and comprehensiveness. The main directions and the most important achievements of M. Ponomarenko’s local-history-organising, museum, archaeological, and monumen-protection activities in the Cherkasy region in the second half of the 1940s–1990s are identified. For the first time, the content and evolution of the theoretical and methodological foundations of M. Ponomarenko’s scholarly research are defined. On the basis of the analysis of historiographical data and archival sources, the main results of M. Ponomarenko’s research on topical issues of biographical, bibliographical, literary, art and linguistic directions of Shevchenko studies in Cherkasy region in the 1950s–1990s are revealed. This scholarly study for the first time systematises and characterises M. Ponomarenko’s scholarly achievements and his original vision of addressing topical issues of toponymy of Zolotonosha land in particular and Cherkasy region in general. The paper analyses the main results of M. Ponomarenko’s scholarly research on the socio-political, socio-economic and cultural history of Zolotonosha and villages of Zolotonosha district starting from the ancient times to the last third of the XXth century.
