Essay

Construction and operation of hydroelectric power plants on rivers lead to large-scale changes in the river ecosystems. This primarily applies to the sections of rivers upstream of the dams, which are converted into reservoirs as a result of the construction of hydroelectric power stations. As a result, the ecosystem of a large part of the river undergoes catastrophic restructuring and becomes converted into a techno-ecosystem incapable of self-regulation and self-restoration. The consequences of such a transformation are well researched and described.
