The actuality of the research is determined by the need for a comprehensive study of the development of flour-milling production in the Right-Bank Ukraine in the second half of the XIX – the beginning of XX century, illustration of the place of the industry in the socio-economic life of the region.
Taking into account the peculiarities of the development of the economy of the Ukrainian lands in the studied period together with its achievements, crisis phenomena and inconsistent state policy. That is why it is advisable to analyze alternative methods and forms of economic development of Ukraine in the current conditions. Achieving this goal is facilitated by a comprehensive study and characterization of the development of flour-milling production in the second half of the XIX – the beginning of XX century on the territory of Kyiv, Podil and Volyn governorates.
The actuality of the research topic is also determined by the fact that domestic and foreign historical science paid very little attention to the development of flour-milling production in the Right-Bank Ukraine in the second half of the XIX – the beginning of XX century.
The aim of the research is to comprehensively study and characterize the development of the flour-milling industry on the territory of the Right-Bank Ukraine in the second half of the XIX – the beginning of XX century.
The object of research - socio-economic processes that took place on the Right-Bank of Ukraine during the studied period.
The subject of research is the development of the flour-milling industry in the Right-Bank Ukraine in the second half of the XIX – the beginning of XX century.
The chronological framework of the work is determined by its thematic focus and covers the period from the second half of the XIX century (since 1861 - the abolition of serfdom) to the beginning of XX century (1914, when the economy began to focus on ensuring hostilities). This approach allowed to analyze and investigate the features and characteristics of the development of flour-milling production in Kyiv, Podil and Volyn governorates during this period.
Territorial boundaries cover the borders of the three Right-Bank governorates of Ukraine, which were part of the Russian Empire, in particular: Kyiv, Podil and Volyn. Today, these territories cover the borders of Vinnytsia, Khmelnytsky, Rivne, Volyn, Kyiv, Zhytomyr, Cherkasy, as well as, partly - Odessa, Ternopil and Kirovohrad regions.
The scientific novelty of the obtained results is as follows:
for the first time:
• conducted a comprehensive study of flour-milling production of the Right-Bank Ukraine in the post-reform period, which allowed to recreate the conditions of socio-economic development of Ukrainian society in the second half of the XIX – the beginning of XX century;
• a significant number of archival materials that were not previously used by researchers were introduced into scientific circulation, which allowed to cover unexplored aspects of the functioning of the flour-milling industry in the territory of Kyiv, Podil and Volyn governorates.
• analysis of the process of formation of workers in the flour industry contributed to the formation of the main sources of their replenishment, number, working conditions, wages, as well as the organization of safety at the mills;
• highlights the impact of progressive state reforms of the second half of the XIX on the development of the flour-milling industry of the studied period, which indicates the efforts of the Russian Empire to reorganize the economic life of the country on the basis of market relations;
in-depth:
• research of the evolution of the material and technical base of the flour-milling industry on the Right-Bank Ukraine in the second half of the XIX – the beginning of XX century, which allowed to characterize the main types of mills and their design features, to trace the industrial revolution in the industry;
• study of the infrastructure and productivity of flour mills in the Kyiv, Podil and Volyn governorates, which made it possible to trace the dynamics of production;
• comparison of railway, water and land transport allowed to determine the importance of the transport network for the development of domestic and foreign trade in flour-milling products;
was further developed:
• analysis of changes in regulations on the basis of which the flour-milling enterprises of the Right-Bank Ukraine carried out their activities in the studied period;
• research of the main forms of domestic trade in flour-milling products on the territory of the Right-Bank Ukraine.
