Hordiei K. Pharmacognostic research on the feverfew and creation medicines on its basis

The global trend of phytotherapy popularization is due to the high safety of medicines based on medicinal plant raw materials. Feverfew is one of the prospective plants for a comprehensive pharmacognostic study. Feverfew is known to be used in most Western countries as an antimigraine, anti-inflammatory, antipyretic and analgesic agent, and its anti-cancer activity is currently being studied. Such a wide range of pharmacological activity is due to sesquiterpene lactones and phenolic compounds in the raw material. Of special interest are feverfew cultivars ‘Phlora Pleno’ and ‘White Gem’ which are widely cultivated in Ukraine and have a similar composition to the species so they are promising to be studied as an additional raw material. Feverfew herb is an official medicinal raw material because the monograph on raw materials is presented in the European, American, American herbal, British pharmacopoeias and in the State Pharmacopoeia of Ukraine. The monograph of SPhU 2.0 ‘Feverfew herb’ is fully harmonized with the monograph in the EuPh. However, an important issue is to take into account the features of the chemical composition of domestic raw materials and their subsequent reflection in the national part of the monograph of the SPhU. Creation of the extract’s technology based on the feverfew herb and subsequent study of their pharmacological activity are supposed to be a prospective task
