A characteristic feature of art at the beginning of the XX century was the active creation of a new modern pictorial language, based on the revived achievements of the past, as well as the latest Western European trends in painting. The combination of the latest painting methods of modernism with the symbolic system of Ukrainian folk culture made it possible to create a unique and distinctive art of the early XX century. In the Ukrainian art of this period, there were a large number of artistic directions. Each artist interpreted the concept of "national style" in his own way, finding for himself a special fulcrum in his work. But each of the artists on the way of their creativity used two most important elements of painting - color and light, using their symbolic properties, which helped them create works filled with deep meaning, spiritual, philosophical and aesthetic sound. The study of the evolutionary development of the role of color and light in world art, in the theory of art, identification of the sources of Ukrainian colorism, analysis of the characteristic features of the main artistic directions of Ukrainian painting of the early twentieth century made it possible to comprehensively analyze the role of color and light, to reveal the symbolics of the color of paintings in the context of the search for a national Ukrainian style.
