Actuality of theme. The dissertation is devoted to the study and identification of classification features of the iconography of the Slobozhan region of the 17th-21st centuries on a unified basis and the development of methods for its stratification, which contributes to its attribution. At the moment, there is no reliable methodology for attributing icon painting to contemporary painting in Ukraine. For the most part, the study of works with several images takes place at the expense of removing the top layer and destroying it in order to get to the author's work, which is more valuable, in the opinion of the researcher. There are icons traveling on the territory of the Slobozhanshchyna with paintings from different periods, where the upper layer is created at the same high artistic level as the lower image, which has artistic and historical significance. Dozens of icons with paintings from different periods have been discovered, in which the upper layer is of a fairly high artistic level. Icons with paintings from different periods need classification to choose a method of their restoration. The only way to preserve all the different layers of the painting is to apply layering, not to destroy the upper image. At this time, several European countries, such as Poland, France, Italy, are engaged in the creation of methods for the restoration of works of painting from different periods. X-ray imaging is the only non-destructive method of studying icon painting from different periods. The radiograph does not provide information about the author's handwriting of the master, the drawing, the texture of the soil and painting, the base, as well as about those changes that occur over time or as a result of restoration interventions. This type of research is not sufficient for reliable attribution, it is not able to reveal the work belonging to a certain school or author, stylistic and coloristic features of the lower image, the type of recording, the technique of performing the lower painting, technological features of each layer (the presence of layers of protective coating between layers of painting of different ages , preservation of the original painting). In Ukraine, this problem has not been given much attention, so it has not been sufficiently studied. The result of the research is the creation of a method of attribution of an icon painting with a different time painting by separating it from an earlier one, transferring the upper image to a new base and carrying out the attribution of already two works using known research methods that allow preserving all different time images. The developed method using PVB adhesive film allows layering of paintings in oil and tempera techniques. In addition, it makes it possible to peel off not only individual fragments, but also complete works. The creation of a method of stratification of paintings of different periods is the key to the preservation of such works and their introduction into scientific circulation. A classification of icon painting with paintings of different periods has been developed according to the following characteristics: variety depending on the school; the plot of the upper painting and the author's; type of layer; purpose of recording; the type of execution technique and the dating of paintings from different periods, which help to choose the method of restoration of the work. The object of the study is an icon painting with paintings from different periods that traveled on the territory of Slobozhanshchyna in the 17th-21st centuries. The subject of the study is the peculiarities of distribution and restoration of works of icon painting of the 17th–21st centuries, which were in the territory of Slobid Ukraine, which allow to perform their attribution. The research methodology includes visual examination of works with the naked eye and using a portable microscope, examination and photography in ultraviolet, infrared rays, and radiography. The obtained information was compared with data from published and archival sources.In addition, the methods of comparative analysis were applied to establish foreign influences at the technical and technological level. The basis of the source base is icons from the collection of the Kharkiv Art Museum, the Chuguyiv Museum named after I. Repin, Odesa Art Museum, National Art Museum of Ukraine, Sumy Art Museum named after N. Onatsky, icons that are in the Transfiguration Church of the village. Lidne, Kharkiv region etc.
