The dissertation is devoted to the study of the urban landscape in Chinese painting of the second half of the 20th – the beginning of the 21st centuries as a complex problem that requires the analysis of genre evolution, pictorial and stylistic transformations, and the influence of sociocultural factors in the development of Chinese art.
Based on current source material, this study presents a comprehensive artistic panorama detailing the origin and evolution of the genre, along with the establishment of the city as a distinct element within the repertoire of Chinese fine art. Special emphasis is placed on examining the coexistence and interaction between the artistic traditions of Chinese art and contemporary trends in the development of urban imagery.
The object of research is the evolution of fine art in China from the second half of the 20th century to the early 21st century. The subject under investigation is the urban landscape as an independent genre within the historical and contemporary contexts of Chinese fine art.
Within the dissertation, the primary trends in the pictorial and stylistic evolution of the urban landscape in Chinese painting from the latter half of the 20th century to the early 21st century are elucidated and defined. The peculiarities of the genre and the genesis of urban landscapes as an independent artistic genre within the historical and contemporary contexts of Chinese fine art have been thoroughly investigated and synthesized. Based on this analysis, the author has identified and outlined the key stages in the development of the urban landscape genre. Additionally, a comprehensive exploration has been conducted to unveil both general and specific characteristics within the repertoire of the urban landscape genre.
The synthesis of the genre’s thematic repertoire structure has enabled the identification and analysis of figurative and stylistic trends in the evolution of the urban landscape genre from the late 19th to the early 21st centuries.
The outcomes of this research, encompassing the analytical sections of the main text, conclusions, as well as the historiographical and bibliographic segments, hold practical significance for Ukrainian Oriental studies. They contribute to the scholarly discourse by introducing current specialized literature on the research issues.
The dissertation is organized into an introduction, three sections, conclusions, a list of references, and appendices, including an album of illustrations.
The first chapter presents the outcomes of the analysis of specialized literature, providing references to sources and substantiating research methods.
The second chapter delves into the primary stages shaping the development of the artistic portrayal of the urban landscape in Chinese fine arts. It comprehensively analyzes the background and emergence of the urban landscape as a distinct genre, shedding light on the city’s depiction in both Chinese cultural tradition and visual practice through a method of periodization.
Moving on to the third chapter, it conducts a comprehensive analysis of urban motifs in Chinese landscape painting from the latter half of the 20th century to the early 21st century. Additionally, it unveils and explores the artistic and genre-specific features characterizing the urban landscape.
The dissertation scrutinizes the artistic and stylistic features in the development of the urban landscape in China from the second half of the 20th century to the early 21st century within the context of the challenges posed by the transformation of artistic language. It establishes that the interaction of historical styles, primarily impressionism, realism, and abstractionism, along with the phenomenology of polystylism grounded in traditional aesthetics, plays a pivotal role in the modern stage of fine art development in China.
The dissertation demonstrates that the use and transformation of impressionist and post-impressionist motifs, coupled with elements from the artistic language of realism and abstraction, are discernible in the urban landscape genre through the works of Chinese artists during the specified time period. The factor of regionalism, significant in Chinese fine art, finds expression in the pictorial paradigm of the urban landscape, particularly in interaction with the phenomenon of polystylism.
