Essay

The dissertation presents the results of a comprehensive study of the Ukrainian folk costume as a symbol of the artistic and creative self-expression of the Ukrainian people. It was determined that its figurative and stylistic structure reflects ethical, artistic and aesthetic ideas of the people, their worldview, mentality, and value system. It is substantiated that the value-based multifunctional potential of the Ukrainian folk costume is an effective means of establishing an artistic dialogue. It has been proven that the artistic image of the Ukrainian folk costume of the late 20th – early 21st centuries is able to fulfil a social-transformative function and a cognitive-heuristic function in the context of cultural practices, and an informational-communicative function in the formation of the Ukrainian national identity. It has been proven that the role of the artistic image of the Ukrainian folk costume in the formation of cultural and creative industries of the late 20th – early 21st centuries depends on the changes in the priorities for preservation of tangible and intangible culture and art; the impact of the designer’s worldview on the reinterpretation of folk clothing in the context of modern fashion trends; roles of representatives of the Ukrainian elite, politicians, well-known media personalities, etc. The transformation of the artistic image of the Ukrainian folk costume of the late 20th – early 21st century was classified by periods as a valuable and multifunctional phenomenon in the context of cultural and creative industries: the first period (1990-2004) is characterized by a return to traditional values, the revival of traditional crafts, and the formation of professional fashion industry; in the second period (2004-2013), the Ukrainian folk costume became a reflection of patriotic trends in society; in the third period (from 2014 to the present) it became recognizable in the world thanks to the entry into international markets of a large number of designers and fashion brands. The influence of the fashion industry on the transformation of the artistic image of the Ukrainian folk costume of the late 20th – early 21st centuries was studied. The emphasis was placed on the growth of individual freedom of the designer and the consumer as a reaction to society’s need for national identification and socio-cultural renewal, preservation and popularization of cultural heritage. The following socio-cultural value benchmarks of Ukrainians, interconnected with the artistic image of clothing, are characterized: interest in the material and spiritual culture of the people; the need for daily use of clothes in ethnic style, which is a sign of national identity; massive study of scientific and popular science literature on traditional Ukrainian costume; development of the phenomenon of collecting the traditional clothing; revival and support of ancient techniques of decorative and applied art; the introduction of ethnic style into the domestic fashion industry.
